Schools for their protection and instruction. It will perhaps be thought by some, that in the por tion of the work devoted to the consideration and refutation of the objections which have been ad vanced against the education of the poor, I have used more pains than was needed; but from the experience which 1 have had, in various parts of the three kingdoms, I can assure my readers, that the old and certainly dying prejudice against universal education, is not yet defunct; many well disposed persons have a sort of nervous appre hension of some indefinite evil likely to result therefrom. For the satisfaction of such, I deemed it proper to consider the matter somewhat at large.
