ELEMENTARY HYDROSTATICS BY HAMBLIN SMITH, M.A GONVILLE AND CAIUS COLLEGE, AND LECTURER AT ST PETER'S SECOND EDITION, REVISED AND ENLARGED RIVINGTONS 1870 186. f. 36 PREFACE THE ELEMENTS OF HYDROSTATICS seem capable of being presented in a simpler form than that in which they appear in all the works on the subject with which I am acquainted. I have therefore attempted to give a simple explanation of the Mathematical Theory of Hydrostatics and the practical application of it. Prior to the publication of this work some copies were privately circulated with a view to obtain opinions from Teachers of experience as to the sufficiency and accuracy of the information contained in it. A few suggestions received in consequence of this arrangement will be found in the Notes at the end of the volume. I am indebted to several friends for the collection of Miscellaneous Examples given in Chapter VIII. In conclusion I have to express my thanks for the favour with which my attempts to simplify the course of Elementary Mathematics have been received by College Tutors and Masters in Schools. J.
