1 Or, for baptism.

2 Or, your

mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are
dead that sought the young child's life. And he 21
arose and took the young child and his mother, and
came into the land of Israel. But when he heard 22
that Archelaus was reigning over Judæa in the room
of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither; and
being warned of God in a dream, he withdrew into
the parts of Galilee, and came and dwelt in a city 23
called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which
was spoken through the prophets, that he should be
called a Nazarene.

And in those days cometh John the Baptist, 3 preaching in the wilderness of Judæa, saying, Re- 2 pent ye; for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. For this is he that was spoken of through Isaiah the 3 prophet, saying,

The voice of one crying in the wilderness,
Make ye ready the way of the Lord,

Make his paths straight.

Now John himself had his raiment of camel's hair, 4 and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his food was locusts and wild honey. Then went out unto him 5 Jerusalem, and all Judæa, and all the region round about Jordan; and they were baptized of him in the 6 river Jordan, confessing their sins. But when he saw 7 many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming 1 to his baptism, he said unto them, Ye offspring of spring of vipers,

who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bring forth therefore fruit worthy of 2 repentance: repentance and think not to say within yourselves, We have 9 Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. And even now the axe lieth at the root of the 10 trees: every tree therefore that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. I in- 11 deed baptize you in water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you 3 in the Holy Spirit and in fire: whose fan is in his hand, 12 and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing-floor; and he will gather his wheat into the garner, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire.

But Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer 1 it now: for thus 1 Or, me it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he 16 suffereth him. Again, the devil taketh him unto an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory 9 of them; and he said unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship 10 me. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. 11 Then the devil leaveth him; and behold, angels

came and ministered unto him.

12 Now when he heard that John was delivered up, 13 he withdrew into Galilee; and leaving Nazareth,

he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is by the 14 sea, in the borders of Zebulun and Naphtali: that

of death,

To them did light spring up.

From that time began Jesus to preach, and to say, 17 Repent ye; for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

And walking by the sea of Galilee, he saw two 18 brethren, Simon who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishers. And he saith unto them, Come ye 19 after me, and I will make you fishers of men. they straightway left the nets, and followed him. And going on from thence he saw other two 21

And Jesus went about in all Galilee, teaching 23 in their synagogues, and preaching the 5 gospel of

And the 24 5 Or, good tid- report of him went forth into all Syria: and they ings: and so brought unto him all that were sick, holden with divers diseases and torments, 6 possessed with de6 Oг, mons, and epileptic, and palsied; and he healed demoniacs. them. And there followed him great multitudes 25 from Galilee and Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judæa and from beyond Jordan.

5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

6 Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called sons of God.

10 Blessed are they that have been persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of 11 heaven. Blessed are ye when men shall reproach you, and persecute you, and say all manner of evil 12 against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets that were before you.

13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost its savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out and 14 trodden under foot of men. Ye are the light of the 15 world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a lamp, and put it under the bushel, but on the stand; and it shineth unto all that are in the 16 house. Even so let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

17 Think not that I came to destroy the law or the 18 prophets: I came not to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass away 19 from the law, till all things be accomplished. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, he shall be called 20 great in the kingdom of heaven. For I say unto you, that except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no wise enter into the kingdom of heaven.

21 Ye have heard that it was said to them of old time,

Ye have heard that it was said, Thou shalt not 27 commit adultery: but I say unto you, that every 28 one that looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. And if thy right eye causeth thee to stumble, pluck 29 it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not thy whole body be cast into hell. And if thy right 30 hand causeth thee to stumble, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not thy whole body go into hell. It was said also, Whosoever 31 shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement: but I say unto you, that every one 32 that putteth away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, maketh her an adulteress: and whosoever shall marry her when she is put away committeth adultery.

Again, ye have heard that it was said to them of 33 old d time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths: but I say unto 34 you, Swear not at all; neither by the heaven, for it is the throne of God; nor by the earth, for it is the 35
