Bid me aspire to joys above,
And walk no more by sight.
HYMN 253. L. M.
Parting with carnal joys.
False as the smooth deceitful sea, And empty as the whistling wind.
2 Your streams were floating me along, Down to the gulph of black despair: And whilst I listen'd to your song, Your streams had e'en convey'd me there.
3 Lord, I adore thy matchless grace, That warn'd me of that dark abyss; That drew me from those treach'rous seas, And bade me seek superior bliss.
4 Now to the shining realms above, I stretch my hands, and glance my eyes; Oh, for the pinions of a dove, To bear me to the upper skies.
A refuge from the Storm. Deut. xxxiii. 27.
EAR refuge of my weary soul,
On thee, when sorrows rise,
On thee, when waves of trouble roll,
2 To thee I tell each rising grief, For thou alone canst heal; Thy word can bring a sweet relief For every pain I feel.
3 But O! when gloomy doubts prevail, I fear to call thee mine; The springs of comfort seem to fail, And all my hopes decline.
4 Yet, gracious God, where shall I flee? Thou art my only trust; And still my soul would cleave to thee, Tho' prostrate in the dust.
HYMN 255. 73.
JESUS, lover of my soul,
Let me to thy bosom fly, While the billows near me roll, While the tempest still is high; Hide me, O my Saviour, hide, Till the storm of life be past; Safe into the haven guide, Oh, receive my soul at last!
2 Other refuge have I none, Lo! I, helpless, hang on thee: Leave, Oh, leave me not alone, Lest I basely shrink and flee : Thou art all my trust and aid, All my help from thee I bring; Cover my defenceless head With the shadow of thy wing!
3 Thou, O Christ, art all I want; Boundless love in thee I find: Raise the fallen, cheer the faint, Heal the sick, and lead the blind. Just and holy is thy name; I am all unrighteousness, Vile and full of sin I am; Thou art full of truth and grace. 4 Plenteous grace with thee is found, Grace to pardon all my sin; Let the healing streams abound, Make and keep me pure within. Thou of life the fountain art, Freely let me take of thee : Reign, O Lord, within my heart, Reign to all eternity.
Our bodies God's Temple. 1 Cor. vi. 19. ND will th' offended God again Return and dwell with sinful men?
Will he within this bosom raise A living temple to his praise?
2 The joyful news transports my breast, All hail! I cry, thou heav'nly guest! Lift up your heads, ye pow'rs within, And let the King of glory in.
3 Enter with all thy heav'nly train, Here live, and here forever reign;
Thy sceptre o'er my passions sway; Let love command, and I'll obey.
4 Reason and conscience shall submit, And pay their homage at thy feet; To thee I'll consecrate my heart, And bid each rival thence depart,
HYMN 257. L. M.
Prayer for grace.
THOU, to whose all-searching sight, The darkness shineth as the light, Search, prove my heart, and let it be Freed from these bonds and join'd to thee.
2 Wash out its stains, refine its dross, Nail my affections to the cross! Hallow each thought; let all within Be clean, as thou, my Lord, art clean.
3 If in this darksome wild I stray, Be thou my light, be thou my way; No foes, no violence I fear, No fraud, while thou, my God, art near.
4 When rising floods my soul o'erflow, When sinking deep in waves of wo, Jesus, thy timely aid impart,
And raise my head, and cheer my hea
5 Oh, let thy hand support me still, And lead me to thy holy
Where toil and grief, and pain shall cea
Where all is calm, and all is peace.
Pleasures unseen. 2 Cor. iv. 18.
H, could our thoughts and wishes fly, Above these gloomy shades,
To those bright worlds beyond the sky, Which sorrow ne'er invades!
2 There joys, unseen by mortal eyes, Or reason's feeble ray, In ever blooming prospects rise, Unconscious of decay.
3 Lord, send a beam of light divine, To guide our upward aim! With one reviving touch of thine, Our languid hearts inflame.
4 Then shall, on faith's sublimest wing,
Our ardent wishes rise
To those bright scenes, where pleasures
Immortal in the skies.
HYMN 259. S. M.
Watch and pray. Matt. xxvi. 41.
Y soul, be on thy guard;
And hosts of sins are pressing hard, To draw thee from the skies.
2 Oh, watch, and fight, and pray, The battle ne'er give o'er;
