2 Are we not tending upward too,
To heaven's desired abode ?

Why should we wish the hours more slow
Which keep us from our God?

3 Why should we tremble to convey
Their bodies to the tomb?

Of Jesus there the body lay,
And scatter'd all the gloom.

4 The graves of all his saints he blest,
And softened every bed;
Where should the dying members rest
But with their dying Head?
5 Thence he arose, ascending high,
And show'd our feet the way;
Our bodies to the Lord shall fly
At the great rising day.

6 Then let the last loud trumpet sound,
And bid our kindred rise;
Awake, ye dead, beneath the ground;
Ye saints! ascend the skies.

151.

1 WHEN youth or age are snatch'd away
By death's resistless hand,
Our hearts the mournful tribute pay
Which friendship must demand.

2 While friendship prompts the rising sigh,

O may this truth imprest,
With awful power, " I too must die,"
Sink deep in every breast.

3 Let this vain world engage no more,
Behold the gaping tomb!
It bids us seize the present hour,
To-morrow death may come.

4 The voice of this instructive scene
May every heart obey!

Nor be the heavenly warning vain,
Which calls to watch and pray.

5 O let us fly, to Jesus fly,

Whose powerful arm can save;
Then shall our hopes ascend on high,
Triumphant o'er the grave.

6 Great God! thy sov'reign grace impart,
With cleansing healing power !

This only can prepare the heart
For death's tremendous hour.

152.

1 HARK what the voice from heav'n proclaims

For all the pious dead;

Sweet is the savour of their names,
And soft their sleeping bed.

2 They die in Jesus, and are blest,
How kind their slumbers are!
From suff'rings and from sins released,
And freed from every snare.

3 Far from this world of toil and strife,
They're present with the Lord;

The labours of their mortal life
End in a large reward.

MISSIONARY HYMNS.

1 CHRISTIANS, ye know the grace divine

Of your redeeming Lord;
Such stores as neither golden mine,
Nor diamonds can afford.

2 For you he left his heav'nly throne,
And all the realms above,
Where angels made his glories known,
In hymns inspired by love.

3 For you he lived in humble form
Among the sons of men;
For you he bore the direful storm,
To bring you peace again.
4 Let grace so free expand your heart
To feel for others' woe;
With earthly substance gladly part,
That all your Lord may know.

5 The banish'd Jews, a favour'd race,
Your friendly aid implore;
O send to them the Gospel-grace,
That they may Christ adore.

6 Your sins may freely be forgiv'n,
Your hearts with hope be blest :
Then show to all the way to heaven,
Where weary souls shall rest.

154.

Song of Jews on return.

1 IN that great day thy soul shall sing,
In joyful strains, to God thy King,
And raise thy voice to heaven:
Thee will I praise with songs of joy,
My hands lift up, my lips employ,
For all thy favours given.

2 Thine anger burn'd, my soul was faint,
Thy wrath has ceased, and my complaint,
For God, my God, is near:
Jehovah's strength to me is shown,
• Nor shall my heart in sorrow moan,
My soul no more shall fear.

3 Then shall ye draw the waters pure,
From streams of life, that shall endure,
And joyfully shall say,
"Praise ye the Lord, invoke his name,
Through ev'ry land his Word proclaim,
In this our glorious day.

4 "Sing, Zion's band, what God hath done,.
See through the world his Gospel run,
With blessings rich and free!
From Zion's hill spread forth his grace,
Extol his works, and seek his face,
The holy One in Three.

155.

1 JESUS shall reign where'er the sun
Doth his successive journeys run;

His kingdom stretch from shore to shore,
Till moons shall wax, and wane no more.

2 To him shall endless prayer be made,
And princes throng to crown his head;
His name, like sweet perfume, shall rise
With every morning sacrifice.

3 People and realms, of every tongue,
Dwell on his love with sweetest song;
And infant voices shall proclaim
Their early blessings on his name.

4 Blessings abound where'er he reigns,
The prisoner leaps to loose his chains;
The weary find eternal rest,

And all the sons of want are blest.

5 Where he displays his healing power,
Death and the curse are known no more;
In him the tribes of Adam boast
More blessings than their father lost.

6 Let every creature rise and bring
Peculiar honours to our King;
Angels descend with songs again,
And earth repeat the loud Amen.

156.

1 BEHOLD the expected time draw near,
The shades disperse, the dawn appear;
Behold the wilderness assume
The beauteous tints of Eden's bloom!

2 Events, with prophecies conspire,
To raise our faith, our zeal to fire;
The ripening fields already white,
Present a harvest to the sight.

3 The untaught heathen waits to know
The joy the Gospel will bestow;
The exiled captive to receive,
The freedom Jesus has to give.

4 Come let us with a grateful heart,
In the blest labour share a part;
Our prayers and offerings gladly bring,
To aid the triumphs of our King.

5 Our hearts exult in songs of praise,
That we have seen these latter days,
When our Redeemer shall be known,
Where Satan long has held his throne.

6 Where'er his hand hath spread the skies,
Sweet incense to his name shall rise;
And slave and freeman, Greek and Jew,
By sov'reign grace be formed anew.

157.

1 WHAT are those soul-reviving strains,
Which echo thus from Salem's plains?
What anthems loud and louder still,
Sweetly resound from Zion's hill ?

2 Lo! 'tis an infant chorus sings
Hosanna to the King of kings!
The Saviour comes! and babes proclaim
Salvation sent in Jesu's name.

3 Nor these alone their voice shall raise,
For we will join this song of praise;
Still Israel's children forward press,
To hail the Lord, their righteousness.

4 Messiah's name shall joy impart,
Alike to Jew and Gentile heart;
He bled for us, he bled for you,
And we will sing hosanna too.

5 Proclaim hosannas loud and clear,
See David's Son and Lord appear!
Glory and praise on earth be given,
Hosanna in the highest heaven.

158.

1 HARK, the song of Jubilee,
Loud as mighty thunders roar,
Or the fulness of the sea,
When it breaks upon the shore!

1 Hallelujah! for the Lord
God omnipotent shall reign;
Hallelujah! let the word
Echo round the earth and main.
