PSALM XXIX.

1 SONS of the Mighty! rise and bring
Your off'rings to th' Eternal King;
Own 'tis Jehovah while you rise,
Your glory and your strength supplies.

2 Though rough as waves which sweep the main,
His voice the people can restrain;
The God of Glory! o'er our souls,
His word like solemn thunder rolls.

3 The mountains bow, the cedars rend,
Lo! at his high command they bend;
So through the world his Gospel ran,
And bow'd the rebel heart of man.

4 His Word like lightning from the skies,
Strikes deep, and quick conviction flies;
His Word with piercing search reveals,
Where guilt its secret haunt conceals.

5 Now in his Temple, round his throne,
His prostrate Church their Lord shall own;
Though sinners rage against his Name,
High o'er the floods He sits supreme!

6 Jesus is King! enthroned on high
He reigns through all eternity!
His glory shall his Church increase,
With strength divine and endless peace.

PSALM XXX.

1 FIRM was my health, my day was bright,
And I presumed 'twould ne'er be night;
Fondly I said within my heart-
"Pleasure and peace shall ne'er depart."

2 But I forgot thine arm was strong,
Which made my mountain stand so long;
Soon as thy face began to hide,

My health was gone, my comforts died.

3 I cried aloud to Thee, my God,

"What canst Thou profit by my blood ?

[ocr errors]

Deep in the dust can I declare

"Thy truth, or sing thy goodness there?

C

4 "Hear me, O God of grace," I said,
"And bring me from among the dead;"
Thy word rebuked the pains I felt,
Thy pardoning love removed my guilt.

5 My groans, and tears, and forms of woe
Are turned to joy and praises now;
I throw my sackcloth on the ground,
And ease and gladness gird me round.

6 My tongue, the glory of my frame,
Shall ne'er be silent of thy Name;
Thy praise shall sound thro' earth and heaven,
For sickness heal'd, and sins forgiven.

PSALM XXXI.

B. W.

1 THY goodness Lord how great!
Eternally the same!
Before the sons of men laid up,

For those who fear thy Name.

2 My times are in thy hand,
My great Almighty Friend,
For thy name-sake, O God, my strength,
Divine protection send.

3 Into thy hands, O Lord,
My spirit I commend,

4

Thou hast redeemed me, God of Truth,
In death be thou my friend.

Thy presence shall protect,
Thy watchful care shall hide;
In the pavilion of thy love,
Secure thy saints abide.

5 For ever bless the Lord,
His great salvation tell;
His marv'llous loving-kindness keeps
The city where we dwell.

6

Despond not of his truth,
Nor yield to anxious grief;
God heard my voice when in distress,
I sought and found relief.

7

O all ye saints, the Lord
With eager love pursue;
Who to the just will help afford,
And give the proud their due.

8 Ye who on God rely,

Courageously proceed;
For he will still your hearts supply
With strength in time of need.

PSALM XXXII.

The all-sufficiency of Christ's merits, and "the necessity of working out our own salvation," are perfectly consistent and intelligible, if we wish to understand them.

1 BLESS'D is the man, for ever bless'd,
Whose guilt is pardon'd by his God;
Whose sins with sorrow are confess'd,
And cover'd with his Saviour's blood.

2 Bless'd is the man to whom the Lord
Imputes not his iniquities;
He pleads no merit of reward,
And not on works, but grace relies.

3 From guile his heart and lips are free,
His humble joy, his holy fear,
With deep repentance well agree,
And join to prove his faith sincere.
4 How glorious glorious is that righteousness,
Which hides and cancels all his sins!
While a bright evidence of grace,
Through his whole life appears and shines.

SECOND VERSION.

1 O BLESSED souls are they,
Whose sins are covered o'er;
Divinely blest to whom the Lord
Imputes their guilt no more.

2 They mourn their follies past,
They keep their hearts with care;
Their lips and lives without deceit,
Shall prove their faith sincere.
While I conceal'd my guilt,
I felt the festering wound;
Till I confess'd my sins to thee,
And ready pardon found.

4 Let sinners learn to pray,

Let saints keep near the throne, Our help in times of deep distress, Is found in God alone.

PSALM XXXIII.

OLD VERSION.

1 YE ransom'd in the Lord rejoice,
To him your voices raise,
For well the righteous it becomes,
To sing glad songs of praise.

2 To God, the Lord, your songs renew,
With courage give him praise:
For why? his word is ever true,
His works, and all his ways.
3 Both judgment, equity, and right,
He ever loved and will;
And with his gifts he doth delight
The earth throughout to fill.
4 For by the word of God alone,
The heavens above were wrought;
Their hosts and powers, every one
His breath to pass hath brought.
5 The waters great, he hath confined
Secure within the shore,
Lest they let loose with fury blind,
The hills again devour.

6 Let all the earth, then, fear the Lord,
And keep his righteous law;
And all the world with one accord,
Dread him, and stand in awe.
7 Whate'er the mighty Lord decrees
Shall stand for ever sure;
The settled purpose of his heart,
To ages shall endure.

8 Blessed are they to whom the Lord,
As God and guide is known;
Whom he doth choose of mere accord,
To take them as his own.

9 Our souls on God with patience wait,
Our help and shield is he:
Thrice Holy Lord, our hearts rejoice,
Because we trust in Thee!

10 The riches of thy mercy, Lord,
Do thou to us extend;
Since we, for all we want or wish,
On thee alone depend.

PSALM XXXIV.

1 THROUGH all the changing scenes of life,

In trouble and in joy;
The praises of my God shall still
My heart and tongue employ.
2 Of his deliverance I will boast,
Till all that are distress'd,
From my example, comfort take,
And charm their griefs to rest.

3 O magnify the Lord with me,
With me exalt his name;
When in distress, to him I call'd,
He to my rescue came.
4 The hosts of God encamp around
The dwellings of the just;
Deliverance he affords to all,
Who on his succour trust.

5 O make but trial of his love,
Experience will decide,-
How blest are they, and only they,
Who in his truth confide.

6 Fear him ye saints, and you will then
Have nothing else to fear;
Make you his service your delight,
Your wants shall be his care.

PSALM XXXV.

Applied to Christ.

1 BEHOLD the love, the gen'rous love,
Which holy David shows;
Mark, how his kind compassions move,
To his afflicted foes.
