Salvation to our God,
And to the Lamb be giv'n, Who call'd us from abroad,
And raised us up to heav'n: He sent his word, his Spirit gave, Our souls to save; praise ye the Lord. With angels now we join,
All clothed in purest white; In worship so divine,
And walk in glorious light : Raised from below, wash'd in the flood Of Jesu's blood, which once did flow.
Now let our praises swell
Through heaven's unbounded plains; God's mercies let us tell
In never-ending strains: The worlds around thy praise shall sing, O Lord, our King, with joyful strains.
WHIT MONDAY, HYMN 120, page 196.
For the presence of the Holy Spirit at the apostolic ceremony of laying on of hands in the ordination of ministers, and the confirmation of youth.
1 COME, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire, And lighten with celestial fire; Thou th' anointing Spirit art, Who dost thy sevenfold gifts impart.
2 Spirit of Christ! be some pledge given, That these our pray'rs are heard, and they Whoe'er shall grasp the sword of heaven, Shall feel thee on their weary way.
3 Spirit of Light and Truth! to thee We trust them in their musing hour; Till they, with open heart and free, Teach all thy word in all its power.
4 When foemen watch their tents by night, And mists hang wide o'er moor and fell, Spirit of counsel and of might,
Their pastoral warfare guide thou well.
5 And O! when worn and tired they sigh With that more fearful war within, When passion's storms are loud and high, And brooding o'er remembered sin,
6 The heart dies down; O Mightiest, then, Come, ever-true, come, ever-near! And wake their slumb'ring love again, Spirit of God's most holy fear !
7 COME, HOLY GHOST! our youth inspire, And purify their hearts' desire; Thou th' anointing Spirit art, Who dost to all thy gifts impart.
8 If some poor wand'ring child of thine Have spurn'd as yet the voice divine, Now, Lord, the gracious work begin, Let him no more lie down in sin.
1 FATHER of heaven! whose love profound A ransom for our souls hath found, Before thy throne we sinners bend, To us thy pard'ning love extend. 2 Almighty Son! incarnate Word! Our Prophet, Priest, Redeemer, Lord! Before thy throne we sinners bend, To us thy saving grace extend. 3 Eternal Spirit! by whose breath The soul is is raised from sin and death, Before thy throne we sinners bend, To us thy quick'ning power extend. 4 Jehovah! Father, Spirit, Son! Mysterious Godhead! Three in One ! Before thy throne we sinners bend, Grace, pardon, life, to all extend.
1 COMMAND thy blessing from above, O God! on all assembled here; Behold us with a Father's love, While we look up with filial fear.
2 Command thy blessing, Jesus Lord! May we thy true disciples be! Speak to each heart the mighty word, Say to the weakest, "Follow me."
3 Command thy blessing in this hour, Spirit of truth! and fill this place With humbling and exalting power, With quick'ning and confirming grace.
4 O Thou, our Maker, Saviour, Guide! One true eternal God confest: May nought in life or death divide The saints, in thy communion blest!
LET God the Father live For ever on our tongues; Sinners from his first love derive The ground of all their songs.
2 Ye saints, employ your breath In honour to the Son,
Who bought your souls from hell and death, By offering up his own.
Give to the Spirit praise Of an immortal strain,
Whose light, and power, and grace convey Salvation down to men.
The water tinged with blood † Bespeaks our pardon'd sin; O may the blessed Spirit bear The same record within.
5 To the great One and Three, That seal this grace in heaven, The Father, Son, and Spirit, be Eternal glory given.
+ See Note at the end of the volume.
1 HOW can we adore or worthily praise
Thy goodness and power, thou God of all grace ? With honour and blessing before thee we fall, Most gladly confessing thee Father of all.
2 Thou, Saviour, art one with God the Supreme, His eternal Son, and equal with him: Invested with glory, on high dost thou sit, While angels adore thee, and bow at thy feet.
3 How great was thy love, how wondrous thy
grace! Thou cam'st from above, to save a lost race; And man to deliver, of woman wast born, That every believer to God might return.
4 How soon will thy seat of judgment appear ! Prepare us to meet and welcome thee there; Thy witnessing Spirit in us shed abroad, And bid us inherit the kingdom of God.
To Him that chose us first Before the world began, To Him that bore the curse, To save rebellious man; To Him that form'd our hearts anew, Be endless praise and glory due.
224. TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER.
1 YE servants of the Lord, Each in his office wait, Observant of his heavenly word, And watching at his gate.
2 Let all your lamps be bright, And trim the golden flame; Gird up your loins as in his sight, For awful is his name.
Watch! 'tis your Lord's command, And while we speak he's near; Mark the first signal of his hand, And ready all appear.
O happy servant he, In such a posture found! He soon his Lord in heaven shall see, And be with honour crown'd.
5 Christ shall the banquet spread With his own bounteous hand, And raise that favour'd servant's head Amidst the angelic band.
