PART II.

1 GUIDE me, O Thou great Jehovah,
Pilgrim through this barren land;
I am weak, but thou art mighty,
Hold me with thy powerful hand.
Bread of heaven,

Feed me till I want no more.

2 Open Thou the chrystal fountain,
Whence the healing streams do flow;
Let the fiery cloudy Pillar
Lead me all my journey through.
Strong deliverer,

Be Thou still my strength and shield.

3 When I tread the verge of Jordan,
Bid my anxious fears subside;
Death's and Hell's o'ermastering Victor,

Songs of praises,
I will ever give to thee.

PSALM CVI.

1 O RENDER thanks to God above
The fountain of eternal love;
Whose mercy firm through ages past,
Has stood, and shall for ages last.

2 Who can God's mighty deeds express,
Not only vast, but numberless ?
What mortal eloquence can raise,
His tribute of immortal praise ?
3 Happy are they, and only they,
Who from thy judgments fear to stray;
Who know what's right, nor only so,
But always practise what they know.

4 Extend to me that favour, Lord,
Thou to thy chosen dost afford;
When Thou return'st to set them free,
Let thy salvation visit me.

5 O may I worthy prove to see,
Thy saints in full prosperity;
That I the joyful choir may join,
And count thy people's triumph mine.

PSALM CVII.

1 IN darkness and the shades of Death,
How sinners waste their vital breath!
Their hearts rebel against the Lord,
Refuse his grace, despise his Word.

2 He bids his anger o'er them rest,
And guilt disturbs the conscious breast.
They fall: no friendly aids console,
Nor hope sustains the trembling soul.
3 Then urged by helpless grief and care,
With importunity of prayer,

To God they fly! his sov'reign grace
Hears and relieves them from distress.

4 Oh! that the sons of men would raise
Their tribute to Jehovah's praise;
Would speak his goodness and declare,
The wonders which their children share.

5 The gates of brass obey his hand,
Nor bars of steel his arm withstand;
Nor sin nor guilt shall grace delay,
When weeping penitents can pray.

SECOND VERSION.

1 GIVE thanks to God, he reigns above,
Kind are his thoughts, his name is love;
His mercy ages past have known,
And ages long to come shall own.

2 Let the Redeemed of the Lord,
The wonders of his grace record;
Israel, the nation whom he chose,
And rescued from their mighty foes.
3 In their distress, to God they cried,
God was their Saviour and their Guide;
He led their march, far wand'ring round,
'Twas the right path to Canaan's ground.
4 O, let the Saints with joy record,
The truth and goodness of the Lord!
How great his works! how kind his ways!
Let every tongue pronounce his praise.

5 The storm is laid, the winds retire,
And all is hush'd at his desire;
While, in the confidence of prayer,
Their souls a calm reliance bear.

PSALM CVIII.

1 O GOD, my heart is fully bent
To magnify thy name;
My tongue with cheerful songs of praise
Shall celebrate thy fame.

2 To all the listening tribes, O Lord,
Thy wonders I will tell,
And to those nations sing thy praise,
That round about us dwell.

3 Because thy mercy's boundless height
The highest heaven transcends;
And far beyond the aspiring clouds
Thy faithful truth extends.
4 Be Thou, O God, exalted high
Above the starry frame,
And let the world with one consent
Confess thy glorious name.
5 That all thy chosen people, Thee,
Their Saviour may declare,
Let thy right hand protect them still,
And answer Thou their prayer.

PSALM CIX.

Applied to Christ.

1 GOD of my mercy and my praise,
Thy glory is my song;
Though sinners speak against thy grace,
With a blaspheming tongue.
2 When in the form of mortal man
Thy Son on earth was found,
With cruel slanders false and vain,
They compass'd him around.
3 Their mis'ries his compassion move,
Their peace he still pursued;
They render hatred for his love,
And evil for his good.

4 Their malice raged without a cause,

Yet with his dy

dying breath

He pray'd for murderers on his cross,
And bless'd his foes in death.

5 Lord, shall thy bright example shine
In vain before my eyes?
Give me a soul akin to thine,
To love my enemies.

6 The Lord shall on my side engage,
And in my Saviour's name
I shall defeat their pride and rage,
Who slander and condemn.

PSALM CX.

1 THE LORD unto my Lord thus spake :
"Till I thy foes thy footstool make
Sit thou in state at my right hand,
Supreme in Zion thou shalt be,
And all 1 thy proud opposers see
Subdued beneath thy just command."

2 Thee in thy power's triumphant day
The willing nations shall obey,
And when thy rising beams they view
Shall all redeem'd from error's night
Appear as numberless and bright
As chrystal drops of morning dew.
3 The Lord hath sworn, nor sworn in vain,
That like Melchisedec's, thy reign
And priesthood shall no period know;
No proud competitor to sit
At thy right hand will he permit,
But all shall at thy footstool bow.

PSALM CXI.

1 PRAISE ye the Lord, our God to praise
My soul her utmost powers shall raise,
With private friends, and in the throng
Of saints, his praise shall be my song.

2 His works for greatness though renown'd,
His wondrous works with ease are found
By those who seek for them aright,
And in the pious search delight.

3 By precept he has us enjoined
To keep his wondrous works in mind,
And to posterity record
That good and gracious is the Lord.

4 His bounty like a flowing tide
Has all his servant's wants supplied,
And he will ever keep in mind
His covenant with our fathers sign'd.
5 He set his saints from bondage free,
And then establish'd his decree
For ever to remain the same,
Holy and reverend is his name.

6 Who wisdom's sacred prize would win
Must with the fear of God begin;
Immortal praise and heav'nly skill
Have they who know and do his will.

PSALM CXII.

1 THRICE happy man, who fears the Lord,
Loves his commands, and trusts his word,
Honour and peace his days attend,
And blessings to his seed descend.

2 The soul that's fill'd with heavenly light
Shines brightest in affliction's night;
Beset with threat'ning dangers round,
Unmoved shall he maintain his ground.

3 When times grow dark and tidings spread
That fill his neighbours round with dread,
His heart is arm'd against the fear,
For God with all his power is there.

4 His soul well fixed upon the Lord
Draws heavenly courage from his word;
Amidst the darkness light shall rise
To cheer his heart and bless his eyes.

5 He hath dispersed his alms abroad, †
His works are still before his God,
His name on earth shall long remain,
While envious sinners fret in vain.
